Around 200 farmers, members of COAG, took part in a protest on Saturday in El Ejido, Almeria province, against the continuing fall in prices of Spanish fruit and vegetable products.
The secretary general of COAG, Miguel López, said that farmers are unable to demand a air price for their produce and that the large supermarket chains were to blame for the current situation. The supermarket chains, naturally, deny being responsible for the low prices paid to farmers.
The protesters converged on three large supermarkets, Lidl, Maxi Dia and Aldi, and deposited large amounts of cucumbers, forcing the establishments to close.
The farmers say the protests will continue until the supermarket chains agree to sit down and talk about production costs and fairer prices for farmers.
