A seven year old girl from Gibraleón, Huelva, has died in hospital in Sevilla as a result of contracting pneumococcal meningitis.
The young girl was in a critical condition in the ICU of the Pediatric unit of the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Sevilla having been admitted on December 1st. The girl had been vaccinated against meningococcal meningitis type C but was affected by a strain for which there is no vaccine.
The girl was first admitted to the Hospital Juan Ramón in Huelva and then transferred to Sevilla. She failed to recover from the illness and died on Monday afternoon.
A boy of a similar age remains hospitalised in Sevilla after showing signs of meningococcal meningitis. He was also transferred from the Hospital Juan Ramón in Huelva to Sevilla. His condition is improving and he has now been transferred to a general ward and could be discharged later this week.
