The Minister of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs, Rosa Aguilar, believes that the EU ban on fishing in Moroccan waters due to the failure to reach a new agreement will cost the Spanish fishing industry around €30 million.
The minister also believes that the EU should pay compensation and hopes that they act in a prompt manner.
Rosa Aguilar stated that 600 jobs are directly dependent on the fishing agreement with many more indirectly and towns such as Barbate depend heavily upon the agreement for survival.
EU Commissioner Maria Damanakis has said she will explore ways to pay compensation to those affected. There is, incidentally, a European Fisheries Fund for that purpose.
