Municipal workers in Barbate, Cádiz province, are reported to be outraged after the Council failed to carry out its promise to pay at least some of the four and a half months outstanding wages, meaning that many have been unable to afford to buy anything for Christmas.
The Unions fear that it will now be at least Tuesday before the workers will receive any money. The Council had promised to pay some of the outstanding amount on Thursday, two days after the workers began industrial action. The Council was keen to state that their offer to pay some money was not connected to the strike action.
Barbate has also been badly hit by the EU decision to suspend the fishing agreement with Morocco.
