The Mayor of Alhaurín El Grande, Juan Martín Serón, has been sentenced to one year suspension from public office and fined €200,000 for one count of bribery relating to the so-called ‘Troya’ case.
The case involved the illegal construction of buildings in the municipality. The Councillor for Town Planning, Gregorio Guerra, was also convicted and given the same sentence.
The trial began in September 2011 against the Mayor, two Council officers and sixteen businessmen but the prosecution dropped the charges against the consultants and developers and they were acquitted.
The prosecution had been asking for a €2 million fine each for the Mayor and Planning Ofiicer, 3 years 9 months suspension from office and a 1 year prison sentence relating to 13 counts of bribery.
