Around 135 tons of rubbish has accumulated on the streets in Chipiona, Cádiz, as a result of nine days of industrial action by employees of the concessionaire for street cleaning and refuse collection.
The employees are protesting about unpaid wages and the danger of staff reductions and a 25% reduction in pay.
A meeting is to be held today between the Council and the concessionaire to try and resolve the situation.
The Council pays nearly €4 million per year for the cleaning service but has accumulated a debt with the concessionaire of around €18 million.
If municipal authorities expect residents and businesses to pay their dues on time, surely the authorities themselves should be setting a far better example.
