The Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo,, met last week in Madrid with several officials to discuss the proposed sewage plant and was apparently informed that, despite all the pre-election rhetoric by the previous government, absolutely nothing had been done towards putting the project out to tender.
In addition, the Mayor was informed that the state’s finances make it difficult to find the necessary €40.7 million to complete the integral sanitation of the Costa del Sol.
The Nerja Council has now approved a new motion, the second in recent weeks, requesting the government of Mariano Rajoy to expedite the project with the utmost urgency.

Hi Nerja Today, as an avid reader of your web site and a frequent tourist to nerja I am somewhat saddened by the saga of the sewage plant.
How the nerja authorities cannot have this issue as a high priority is beyond belief!!
I have once again booked my annual summer holiday for 2012 and my mind already pictures images of the sewage trail that i have witnessed for many years spoiling the beach and water. I am further concerned of the possible health risk to all the folk that use the beaches along the nerja coastline including myself and my family.
Its all well and good having the boats with the nets on the front trying their best to delay the sewage from landing on the beach, but i can still remember many days of my holiday in 2011 where i could not go into the water due to the sewage which had settled in front of the calahonda beach.
Its all well and good to be giving quality awards out to tourist hotels for their excellence as the nerja hotels received recently in Madrid, but a blue flag beach for cleanliness and water that is environmentally friendly to the marine life is far more of an area to offer awards to.

I could not agree more with the sentiments expressed here. I love going in the sea and frequently go to Nerja as a property owner and am fed up with not feeling like going in the water because of the trail that can be seen from the edge of the water. It is disgusting and should be an absolute priority to sort out. We all love the town and the coastline is beautiful and the quality of the water should be the same. I am taking my grandsons in the summer and will be constantly concerned about them going in the water and will probably only let them go in the pool. It must be funded and sorted out as soon as possible. Surely it is breach of EU regs?

This was published in EuroWeekly in May 2011 – http://www.euroweeklynews.com/news/axarquia-malaga-east/87183-divers-warn-of-raw-sewage-leaking-into-the-sea-off-nerja.
Obviously still not important enough to warrant a sewage plant for Nerja!

“Surely it is breach of EU regs?”
hahahahaha. Spain does not implement EU regs like the rest of the eurozone, if at all. Lesson one in EU law is that Spain does not have to do anything the EU tells it.
