Manchester United face an uphill battle to reach the Europa League quarter-finals after a shock 2-3 first-leg defeat by Athletic Bilbao.
Wayne Rooney put United ahead from close range before Fernando Llorente’s header drew the visitors level. Second-half goals from Oscar de Marcos and Iker Muniain put Athletic back in the leade. A late Rooney penalty made the final scoreline a little more respectable for United who have only had one win at home in Europe this season.
Valencia conceded two late goals against PSV Eindhoven but came through their first-leg match 4-2 with goals from Victor Ruiz, Soldado with two and Piatti. Toivonen and Wijnaldum were the scorers fro PSV.
Atlético Madrid beat Besiktas 3-1 with first half goals from Salvio, who bagged a brace, and Adrián, Simäo pulling one bak for the visitors early in the second half.
