It is less than three weeks until Semana Santa and Nerja, along with neighbouring Torrox and other municipalities, are waiting on the Department of Coasts to say whether they are going to carry out the perennial sand replenishment of storm damaged beaches.
El Chucho beach in Nerja is in need of repair and Ferrara Playa in Torrox is, as usual, almost non-existent in places, but a new central government with an urgent need to cut costs all over the place appears to have brought uncertainty into the equation.
Rather than carry out definitive measures to prevent the regular beach erosion, the Department of Coasts has always preferred to ship lorry loads of sand to affected areas, although undoubtedly more expensive in the long run. Such action is normally announced in advance, but now Nerja, like Torrox, is having to push the Junta de Andalucia for an answer on the subject.
