Preparation work for the restoration of the marble paved area of the Patio de los Leones in the Alhambra in Granada begins tomorrow and is scheduled to last for two months.
The floor is made from white Macael (Almeria) marble and the idea is to restore the patio to the image conceived by Sultan Muhammad V in the XIV century. The first chroniclers of the time, such as Jerónimo Münzer, described the patio as a solid white marble courtyard.
A team of specialists using the latest technology is in charge of the renovation work with great care being taken to preserve the surroundings.
The fountain will be turned off during these works but public access to the area will not be affected.
