A police officer who was detained on Sunday along with a companion, also a police officer, after their vehicle ran over and killed a German cyclist on Mallorca was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The incident occurred at 10:30 at km 7 of the MA-6070 near urbanisation Puig d’en Ros in Llucmajor.
A group of cyclists were travelling along the road when one of them, a 64 year old woman, was run over. When the Emergency Services arrived on the scene they could do nothing to save her life.
The car, meanwhile, had fled the scene without stopping. It was later stopped by the Guardia Civil and the occupants, who identified themselves as National Police officers, were arrested. According to the National Police, the two officers were off duty at the time.
The driver has been charged with causing the death of a German cyclist through drunken driving, failing to help at the scene of an accident and trying to evade capture. His colleague was charged with failing to help at the scene of an accident.
