Nerja Council has decided to reintroduce the household waste tax, abolished in 1992 and absorbed into the IBI (rates), due to the economic crisis and the need to start paying outstanding debts to suppliers.
The Council has submitted this ‘plan’ to the Ministry of Finance to comply with the requirements necessary for the payment of outstanding debts to suppliers which at the end of 2011 stood at €4.8 million.
The Councillor for Finance, Antonio Villasclaras, stated that there was ‘no choice’ as the Council has to justify new sources of municipal income and a balance between income and expenditure.
The tax will come into effect in 2013 and will be in the region of €36 per year. based on 15,000 homes in the municipality, this measure should raise €540,000 per annum. The Council will study discounts for large families and the unemployed.
Rubbish collection currently costs the Council in the region of €1.6 million per year with no related direct income.
The Council is hoping to lower the rate of IBI in 2014, the first time this can legally be done.
Marilyn Evans says:
If it was absorbed into the IBI charges, that is where it is, so this is really just a new tax
