The water supply to the Higuera fountain (fuente de la Higuera) just outside Álora has been turned off after the water was found to contain high levels of nitrates.
The Council has intensified its cleansing and sanitisation of the area and hope to have the fountain working again shortly. The cause of the excessive nitrate contamination is not known. The Council stresses that in the overall network the water is fit for drinking.
The water for the Higuera fountain comes from a local spring, highly regarded and used by many farmers in the area.
About a month ago, the Council did carry out improvement and general cleaning work in the area.
