According to the Consumer Price Index of Origin and Destination (IPOD), the difference in price for agricultural products between the farm and the retail outlets increased, on average, fourfold in March.
The price differential in March averaged 4.33, slightly down on the December figure of 5.13.
The agricultural index was 4.8 in March and the livestock index was 3.02. In agriculture, the biggest margins were for onions (900%), aubergines (770%), cabbage (707%), cauliflower (564%), lemons (529%), apples (457%) and olives (456%).
The UCE has asked for more controls in the process of distribution and marketing of foods and greater transparency to allow the consumer to know the extent of the margins and for the producer to know who exactly is benefiting along the way from field to table.
