The Sport-Tourism Plan being developed by the Council and the private sector appears to be paying dividends, with more athletes using the facilities in Nerja as part of their training.
Last year, between January and June, there were apparently around 500 foreign athletes, mostly from Europe, using the sporting facilities at one time or another. This year the figure is around 800.
We have already seen Norwich FC using the facilities of the Enrique López Cuenca Stadium to train for an important match and now, with the Olympics looming in London, there are quite a few athletes being attracted to Nerja.
Amongst the most high profile is the Beijing high jump champion, Tia Hellebaut from Belgium.
