The Constitution Tribunal (TC) has decided to admit a challenge brought by the Prime Minister against the amendment of the Electoral Law of Andalucia which established the incompatibility of holding two major positions, such as member of the Andalucian parliament and municipal Mayor or provincial president.
The TC must now rule on the issue within 5 months, the clock starting from the date of the original appeal which was March 7th 2012. Until such a ruling is made, the amended law is suspended.
The Andalucian Parliament adopted the change to the Electoral Law on November 23rd with the votes of the PSOE-A, the PP-A and IULV-CA voting against.
At the last elections, the PP elected nine mayors and the IULV-CA elected one.
One can only logically assume therefore that none of the (well paid) positions – MP, Mayor, Provincial President – are in fact full-time posts and one should never hear the phrases ‘too busy’ or ‘not enough time’ relating to the completion of tasks or projects.
