Sixteen year old Chinese pianist Yutong Sun has won the LIV Jaén International Piano Competition, one of the oldest and most prestigious contests of its kind in Spain.
The final round of the competition was held at the Nuevo Teatro Infanta Leonor to the accompaniment of the Granada Orchestra conducted by Paul Mann from the Odense Symphony Orchestra.
The jury, chaired by the pianist Ana Guijarro, awarded the first prize of 20,000 euros, a gold medal and a diploma to Yutong Sun for his interpretation of Mozart’s concerto for piano and orchestra number 20 in D minor, KV 466.
The prize also includes recording an album with the record label Naxos and six concerts: one in the Tsai Performing Arts Center at the University of Boston, three recitals in Granada and a final performance in Jaén .
Second place went to Korean Miyeon Lee for his interpretation of the concerto for piano and orchestra No. 2 in G minor Opus 22, by Saint-Saens, and third place went to Spanish-Israeli pianist Michael Davidov, who performed the concerto for piano and orchestra No. 1 in E minor opus 11 by Chopin.
