The controversy surrounding the proposed construction of a new mortuary in Torre del Mar is a step closer to being resolved following a tentative agreement between Vélez-Málaga Council and the promoter of the facility.
The controversy began after the promoter bought a 3,000 square metre plot of land in Cuesta del Visillo in Torre del Mar, right next to the residential area of Cerro del Águila.
In January 2010, despite opposition from local residents, the Council granted planning permission for the mortuary. However, such was the opposition to the project that in January 2011, the Council was forced to open negotiations with the promoter to find an alternative site.
In February 2012, the Council voted to extend the term of the planning permission granted to the promoter by one year in order to enable further negotiations to take place and to avoid having to pay compensation.
The new site under consideration is near the tram depot. Access to the plot is not ideal but the Council believes the problems can be surmounted.
