The day started off a bit cloudy and misty, particularly over the Nerja hills, but it cleared to become quite a scorcher as the ‘Romeria de San Isidro’ got under way.
Crowds filled the Balcón de Europa where singing and dancing heralded the start of the festivities. The statue of San Isidro was brought out of the iglesia El Salvador ready for its journey up to the Ermita in the grounds of the Nerja Caves in the village of Maro, a distance of about 4.5 kilometres.
The procession – horses, carriages, the magnificent oxen, beautifully decorated floats and pedestrians decked out in their finery – very soon became strung out, as it always does, and it was about four hours, maybe more, before the final stragglers reached the Nerja Caves.
