The 400 seater Torrox theatre, built at a cost of €7.5 million and inaugurated in March 2011, is still not being used except, for the past year, as offices for the Department of Culture and its dependent agencies.
The Council contributed €5.5 million of the cost, the regional and provincial governments providing the remaining €2 million, €1 million each.
The Department of Culture moved into the building pretty sharply but no cultural programme has so far been developed to use the facility for the purpose for which it was (presumably) intended.
The Council has cited the requirement of various technical reports relating to the smooth running of the facility and the completion of other formalities relating to water and light as the reasons for the delay, although these didn’t stop the Department of Culture from moving in a year ago.
An official visit in February by the then Minister of Culture, Paulino Plata, led to the promise of a programme of events after Easter. Now, the latest plan is for events to begin in the summer, or autumn.
