Residents of some housing estates on the outskirts of Rincón de la Victoria, such as Parque Victoria and Los Altos de Lo Cea, have had to get used to living without street lighting for long periods as a result of persistent thefts of electrical cables.
Several problems or issues compound the situation. The low number of residents in some of these areas mean that it is far more difficult to catch the thieves. In addition, many of the estates have not yet been officially handed over to the municipal authority, so responsibility for maintenance rests with the promoters.
In recent months, most of the properties have been taken over by banks, institutions not in the habit of collaborating with the authorities. The Council is in the process of implementing a system of ‘guarantees’ to be deposited by promoters to cover such things as damage, cleaning and maintenance.
