Four directors of various nursing homes in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Jerez and San Fernando in Cádiz province have so far been charged with fraudulently using the electronic health cards of deceased people for the purpose of obtaining drugs from pharmacies.
The police operation, codenamed ‘Pocima’, began after suspicions were aroused that nursing homes could be using the health cards of people who had died in order to obtain medications. Research into dates of deaths, use of cards and other details led to the verification that various medicines and medical related equipment was being obtained fraudulently.
The investigation is still ongoing and further arrests are not being ruled out.
