The crackdown on street vendors only lasted a couple of days and they are now all back on the streets, openly displaying their dodgy CD’s, DVD’s, fake sunglasses etc, so what did it achieve except for a bit of ‘we’re doing something’ publicity? It is the same with the annual crackdown, or ‘campaign’, against irresponsible dog owners. It lasts a couple of days and then it’s back to normal.
I’m not saying it is a bad thing, as it could mean everything in the garden is pretty rosy, but how often does one actually see a police officer (local) patrolling the streets? There were two on the Balcon the other day moving on a bubble-blower and I saw two arranging for cars to be towed for the San Isidro procession but apart from that, I would say that I have not seen a policeman on more than about ten occasions during a whole year. And I do travel the entire town extensively and at all times of day.
Maybe I always just manage to miss them.
