Nerja has become the second municipality in Málaga province to implement the 37.5 hour working week for municipal employees, although an aspect of ‘flexibility’ has been added.
Under Law 2/2012, June 29th, of the State Budget for 2012, municipal employees are required to work no less than 37.5 hours per week, averaged over a one year period, without receiving extra remuneration. The previous working week for municipal employees was 35 hours per week.
Nerja has decided to implement this law but with a modification during the summer months of July and August. During the summer, municipal workers have always worked the so-called daylight savings hours, namely 08:00 to 14:00. That meant a working week of 30 hours during the summer.
Municipal employees, of which there are 350, can choose to continue working the 30 hours per week during July and August and make up the deficit, around 56 hours, as from September 1st, or work the 37.5 hours as from now.
