Around 30 of the 55 lifeguards hired to oversee the beaches in Nerja have been protesting about the working conditions this year.
The lifeguards say that they have been contracted for half days, 20 hours per week, but are only being paid for 15 hours, earning about €450 per month. Last year, they say, the same work got them €800 per month.
The Council says that the lifeguards are contracted for four hours per day and that previous contracts had different qualification requirements attached.
At least they have a job.
There has also been criticism of the fact that the hiring process has been in the hands of the district authority (Mancomunidad – Commonwealth) with allegations of cronyism, four lifeguards having been hired without completing the required physical examinations and tests.
