An extraordinary meeting of WWF members has voted to delete Article 6 of its statutes which names King Juan Carlos as Honorary President.
King Juan Carlos was the founding president of the Spanish WWF and was its executive chairman from 1968 up until to his coronation in 1975. In 1975 he was made Honorary President.
The extraordinary meeting was announced after the King’s hunting trip to Botswana, an expedition which not only resulted in the monarch somehow breaking his hip and requiring surgery but also drew widespread condemnation in Spain and abroad. The meeting decided that the King should no longer hold the title of Honorary President.
The WWF in Spain has 33,000 members, although not all are entitled to vote.
