The 21 year old Rumanian national who who was arrested on Saturday after stealing a car with a baby inside has been swiftly brought to trial and has been sentenced.
The youth stole the car from a supermarket car park in Torremolinos while the mother of the child was putting her shopping in the boot of the vehicle. Police located the vehicle very quickly after the driver turned into a dead-end street in Benalmádena.
The youth tried to evade capture by hiding under a car in the street but was spotted by the police and duly arrested.
On Sunday, the accused appeared in court in Torremolinos and was fined €2,100 and ordered to pay €550 compensation to the mother of the baby. The accused claimed not to have known that the baby was in the vehicle and when he realised the boy was in the car seat in the back, stopped and tried to run.
The youth had only been charged with theft and not kidnapping.
