Estepona Council is hiring a boat specialising in the removal of jellyfish from the waters in the municipality.
Last week, around 900 people were treated for jellyfish bites and the Council has decided to take steps to prevent further problems during the summer.
Hot weather, high salinity levels due to lack of rain/river water entering the sea and a lack of turtles in the Mediterranean, a natural predator of the jellyfish, mean that further plagues of these stingers are highly likely.
The specialist boat, costing €9,000 per month, will begin operating on Friday at a distance of 21.5 kilometres from the coast and targeting concentrations of jellyfish.
