Unions in Jerez have called a strike for August 9th in protest at Council plans to lay off 300 workers at the end of the ERE consultaion period on August 19th.
The strike action was unanimously approved by the union leaders but has not been put to a general assembly of workers in order to save time. The unions will now canvass the municipal employees to request their support.
Jerez Council employs nearly 2,000 people but is heavily weighed down by a municipal debt in excess of €1 billion.
The Council meeting on Friday was interrupted several times by a crowd of around 200 people shouting, chanting and rattling noisy huosehold items and appliances.
