A crime report issued by the Ministry of Interior shows that the number of burglaries committed during the first six months of 2012 increased by 24.7% compared to the same period in 2011 and the number of murders rose by 3.2%, although the overall number of crimes and misdemeanors fell by 1.8%.
A total of 1,114,073 offences were committed in the first six months of 2012 according to information supplied by the National Police, Guardia Civil, Ertzaintza, Mossos d’Esquadra and Policía Foral de Navarra.
Robberies were down by 5.7%, although burglaries were up by 24.7% as a result in changes in methodology, thefts from garages, sheds, storage rooms and second homes now being included in this category. There were 62,359 burglaries in the first six months of this year.
Violent crime was up by 5.9%, with theft with violence or intimidation rising by 9.2% to a total of 45,596 incidents.
Drug trafficking offences were up by 2.2%, vehicle thefts were down 9.6% and criminal damage was down by 2.2%.
There were 193 murders in the first half of this year, up from 187 during the same period in 2011.
