The president of the Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, has said that the 3.3% decrease in the salary of civil servants included in a budget amendment approved in July will become void as a result of the subsequent state cutbacks and will be returned in the coming months.
The salary reduction was approved in order for Madrid to meet the deficit target set by the State. The reduction is salary of political figures, which is around 10% according to Aguirre, will remain.
Aguirre justified the decision by saying that the loss of the Christmas bonus, one of the fourteen payments made to civil servants, accounts for approximately 7% of their salary and therefore they will be compensated with a payment in the next few months.
Aguirre did concede that the civil servants had enormous benefits, such as a job for life and a salary, unlike several million other people in the country.
