Six people died this morning, three women and three children, when the minivan in which they were all travelling left the road and plunged into a canal near Naveros del Pisuerga, Palencia.
The incident happened at 04:45 on the PP-6112 in the direction of Ventosa de Pisuerga, Valladolid, when the Volkswagen Touran left the road and plunged into the Canal de Castilla. The victims were all from the same family.
The family were returning from the festivities in San Llorente de la Vega when the accident occurred. The car behind the minivan was also carrying members of the same family and one woman, whose 12 year old son was in the minivan, dived into the canal to try and open the doors of the stricken vehicle.
The site of the accident, a sharp bend in the road next to lock number 13, has claimed a total of 14 lives in the past 39 years.
