The former Alameda on calle Jaén is now a Cider House, Sidreria El Llagar, serving Asturian cider and various Asturian tapas with the odd novelty thrown in for good measure.
The cider is bottled and you can choose either a ‘taster’ for €1 or the whole bottle (70 cl) for €5. A large wooden hombre is put over the bottle and you use this to fill your glass, pressing a button to start the pump. Here it is in action, but don’t blink or you’ll miss it.
I had two tapas with the bottle of cider, one being some rather delicious Asturian ‘Morcilla’ (Black Pudding) with peppers.
I had never tried Asturian cider before – Asturia being one of the very few areas in Spain to produce cider – but it is very pleasant. Very dry, and I mean VERY dry.
At €1 for a ‘taster’ or €5 for a bottle it is no contest, go for the bottle otherwise you will end up paying a fortune. The staff will also advise you that a bottle is far, far cheaper unless you just plan to have one ‘shot’ and move on.
