An investigation into the cause of the wildfire in Estepona which resulted in 500 people having to leave their homes has led to the conclusion that the blaze was caused by rabbit hunters in the area.
Local residents apparently believed all along that the hunters were responsible for the fire, many assuming it was the result of a carelessly discarded cigarette. However, it now seems that one of the small fires used to flush the rabbits out of their homes got out of hand.
The damage caused by the fire continues to be a matter of dispute. Early reports indicated that some 6 to 8 hectares of land had been affected, but INFOCA put the figure slightly higher at 102.4 hectares.
