The first silverware of the season, the Spanish Super Cup, belongs to Real Madrid after a 2-1 win over Barcelona at the >Bernebeu in the second leg. The aggregate score was 4-4, Real taking the honours on away goals.
Barcelona in the first half looked a shadow of their former selves, unable to string passes together and constantly giving the ball away. Two defensive errors led to goals by Higuaín and Ronaldo and they could have easily scored several more if it hadn’t been for Valdes in the Barca goal.
To make matters worse for Barcelona, Adriano was sent packing in the first half for being a naughty boy and they had to play the bulk of the match with only ten men.
Barcelona began to play much better in the second half and they even managed a couple of attempts on target. Then, a free kick was beautifully struck by Lionel Messi, who had been unusually quiet up to this point, and it was 2-1 and all to play for.
Real, however, remained solid, passing the ball around in the manner which we normally expect to see from Barca and they held on to capture their first silverware of the new season.
