The Council is asking the provincial delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment to establish a line of financial support to allow farmers in Nerja to purchase the necessary machinery to crush and reintegrate agricultural residue back into the soil.
The Council argues that many of the wildfires are caused by the burning of stubble and other crop residues because farmers do not have the means to buy the expensive machinery necessary to avoid such a course of action.
The Council also added that crushing the stubble and ploughing back into the fields will increase the fertility of the soil.
For these reasons, the Council is asking for grants to be made available to local farmers for the purchase of machinery.
