Tax Officials and Guardia Civil officers in Algeciras have seized a shipment of 22,000 pistols and other munitions hidden in a consignment of textiles unloaded from a ship travelling from Turkey to Djibouti.
Customs officers became suspicious of a container which had arrived from Turkey and decided to inspect it. Beneath a layer of textiles they found the guns, detonators and other items wrapped in burlap.
The guns had been rendered ‘unusable’ but the process is reversible and they could be made usable once more once they reached their destination.
Investigations are being carried out in Algeciras and in the two countries involved, Turkey and Djibouti, but no arrests have been made.
