A survey of tourism in Nerja during 2011 carried out by SOPDE shows that the majority of visitors to the town were foreigners and the largest contingent came from the UK.
The profile of the average tourist in 2011 was: Average age 48 years, preferred to stay in 3 or 4 star hotels and visited Nerja for a minimum of ten days.
Of the tourists surveyed, 24.16% claimed to have visited Nerja between 3 and 5 times and 71.14% of first time visitors stated that they would be returning to the town within the next three years.
Average hotel occupancy in Nerja over the whole of 2011 was 50%, with 181,003 travellers making a total of 775,923 overnight stays.
The survey also showed that the majority of visitors arranged their own holidays via the internet.
