Police in Portugal have detained the alleged killer of 75 year old Laureano Jiménez who died on August 31st 2012 after being mugged while tending his orchard in Isla Cristina, Huelva province.
On August 30th, Laureano Jiménez was working on irrigating his orchard in Isla Cristina when he was approached by a man who demanded money. The victim told the mugger he had no money on him but offered his mobile phone, at which point the mugger lashed out with his fists and a knife.
Laureano Jiménez suffered two stab wounds to the neck, multiple fractures of the skull and defensive wounds on his hands and wrists. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and died the following day.
When the police arrived on the scene, the attacker had already fled the scene. A search for the attacker, which even involved a helicopter, was unsuccessful.
