One person has been arrested and police are searching for a second person in connection with a fire in Mijas on Friday which necessitated evacuating around 70 people from their homes.
According to witnesses, two men were using cutting equipment on an abandoned metal structure, possibly an advertising hoarding, when sparks caused a fire. Witnesses noted the license plate of the vehicle at the scene and police located it and detained the driver. The cutting equipment was also seized.
The fire burned mainly scrub and woodland, although several houses were damaged and a vehicle was destroyed in the blaze. Fortunately, there are no reports of any injuries. The area covered by the fire is estimated at around four hectares.
The fire was brought under control at around 18:30 and it is being monitored overnight as aerial extinguishing is not possible in the dark.
