The Council has now passed a motion requesting the Junta de Andalucia to arrange for the ‘urgent’ cleaning of the Rio Seco and the Barranco del Puerto in preparation for the possibility of heavy rains.
The Council says that the growth of the vegetation prevents proper drainage and that the margins of the river are becoming eroded, not to mention the accumulated debris in the riverbed.
Although the river has a low flow or is dry for much of the year, it is prone to flooding during periods of heavy rain.
The rivers have been dry for most of the summer, an ideal opportunity to remove the debris, particularly glass, from the riverbeds but, like in many municipalities, action is only being requested just before the possibility of rain becomes more likely.
