In June, the Council in San Juan de Aznalfarache decided to nominate the Virgen del Carmen as ‘Perpetual Mayor’, with 2,200 local residents having signed a petition in support of this move. However, a local resident then discovered that the town already had a perpetual Mayor.
General Francisco Franco was granted the title of Perpetual Mayor, and awarded the Gold Medal of the town, in 1964.
In compliance with the Law of Historical Memory and local municipal regulations, which prevent two people having the title of Perpetual Mayor, the process began to remove the titles bestowed upon General Franco.
This has now just been achieved following a vote at the full Council meeting. The removal of the honours was approved with the votes of the PSOE and IU, the PP abstaining.
