Sunday has been a day when many people have been trying to salvage what belongings they can from flooded buildings as well as time for the authorities to begin the process of assessing the damage, both in material and financial terms.
The Junta de Andalucia is proposing to set up a Technical Office to help assess the damage so that farmers can quickly submit claims. For many people, their only hope is to be able to claim through insurance companies or perhaps be eligible for some form of government aid.
Agriculture has suffered extensive damage, with 700 hectares of crops destroyed in Antequera alone. The damage is not just limited to the actual flood damage but to the prospects for planting new crops in the near future. Potatoes, onions, asparagus, leeks and lettuce are just some of the crops which have been destroyed.
In the valle del Guadalhorce, Pizarra, Alora and Cártama it is the citrus crops that have suffered and associations are asking for help from government authorities and from the EU, the damage in this area being so far estimated at several hundred million euros.
Irrigation infrastructure and rural roads have also been casualties of the floods.
