Each person in Andalucia wastes 69 kilos of food per year, making a total of 578 tons per year to the value of €2.5 billion. That’s half the amount of the bailout being requested this evening.
Andalucia claims to be one of the regions producing the least surplus food, but according to a report it is the region with the highest percentage of avoidable waste at 10.4% of food purchased.
The report states that 51% of the generated waste relates to fruits and vegetables and 20% to fish. Poor maintenance of products and poor planning of meals are the apparent main reason for this situation.
Andalucia is second only to Cataluña in the poor planning of meals and second to Galicia as the region with a highest frequency of food purchases at 15.2 times per month.
Andalucians also tend to be impulse buyers and frequently take notice of special promotions and discounts.
