Metro Madrid has announced plans to reduce services on all lines of the network by 50 percent after 11pm. The company also announced earlier this year that it is considering bringing forward the shut-down of the metro to 12am from 2am four nights a week from Sunday to Wednesday.
Metro Madrid justifies the new reduction in services based upon a 12% decrease in overall demand since 2007. The latest cutback follows a series of ticket price hikes, an 11% rise in May and a 2% hike in September. Unions have called fresh partial strikes for October 22, 26 and 29.
