The Council is studying an offer from an Australian city to rent the three trams currently sitting doing nothing in the town since the suspension of the tram service in June 2012.
The trams are still costing the Council money, despite not being used, and still have to be paid for. The Mayor apparently sees no legal problems involved in renting the trams to Australia and says that it would not mean the end of the system in Vélez-Málaga as, if a solution to financing is achieved, they could always buy new ones!
The tram system has cost in excess of €40 million since its inception in 2006 and the operating costs have left the Council severely in debt to the concessionaire.
