Chinese merchants on the Cobo Calleja industrial estate in Granada, the most important centre in Europe for the import of oriental goods, closed their businesses on Saturday as the first ever industrial action took place in the sector.
The objective of the industrial action was to demonstrate their honesty in the wake of Operation Emperor and the decision to close was to show their rejection of corruption.
Chinese entrepreneurs say that Operation Emperor, an investigation into corruption, money laundering and other crimes and involving some well-known names, has damaged the Chinese community in Spain and resulted in a 70% drop in sales.
