The Government met in emergency session on Friday following the death of former socialist councillor Amaia Egaña in the town of Barakaldo, the second suicide within the past twenty days by someone facing eviction from their home.
The PP Government is asking for a moratorium on evictions in the case of vulnerable families until the law can be reformed, and they are maintaining contact with the opposition PSOE in order to speed up any legal change.
The PSOE leader, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, has sent a letter to the president of the CECA (Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros) and the president of the AEB (Asociación Española de Banca) requesting them to suspend all evictions.
It would appear that the majority of political parties, judicial authorities and other organisations believe that the current law governing evictions and the eviction process are inadequate and needs reforming. It just remains to be seen how quickly this can be put into effect.
Hopefully before more lives are wasted.
