For the first time since 1992, residents of Nerja will have to pay for rubbish collection, the re-instated tax coming into effect on January 1st 2013. Each household will have to pay €3 per month which will raise an estimated €545,000 per year for the municipal coffers.
The reintroduction of the rubbish collection tax is justified as being an integral part of the Adjustment Plan submitted by the Council to the Ministry of Finance.
Rubbish collection has been costing the Council €1.6 million per year and is not compensated through direct income. The Council is quick to point out that the rate of €3 per month per household is lower than in neighbouring municipalities.
