The PP government in Vélez-Málaga has decided not to go ahead with the proposed construction of a new swimming pool in Vélez, part of a project to improve the facilities at the Fernando Ruiz Hierro sports centre, saying that the existing indoor pools in Vélez and Torre del Mar and outdoor pools in Vélez, Triana and Cájiz are sufficient to meet demand.
The decision could mean that the Council will have to pay back part of the €600,000 grant awarded by the Junta de Andalucia. The improvement project is being financed equally by the Council and the Junta de Andalucia.
The Council sees little point in having yet another outdoor swimming pool when there is demand for other sports facilities. The idea is to amend the project and instead of a pool, build tennis courts at the Fernando Ruiz Hierro sports centre.
The new indoor swimming pool in Torre del Mar is currently scheduled to be completed in March 2013.
